Vasyl Lypkivskyi

Vasyl Kostiantynovych Lypkivskyi was a Ukrainian church leader, theologian, and historian, and the first metropolitan of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church from 1921 to 1927. He advocated an independent Ukrainian church, conciliar governance, elective clergy, and the use of Ukrainian in worship.

Repression

Under GPU pressure, the Second All-Ukrainian Orthodox Church Council removed Lypkivskyi from the UAOC leadership in 1927. The NKVD arrested him in October 1937 on the fabricated charge that he belonged to an “anti-Soviet fascist organization of churchmen.” He was executed in Kyiv’s Lukianivska Prison on 27 November 1937.
